If you currently wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, you should have an annual examination.  An eye exam is more than just a vision test.  We examine your eye coordination, test the eye pressures, assess the optic nerve and corneal health, and screen for eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.  If you do not have any vision problems you should still get a baseline examination to understand where your vision qualifies and what risks you have to develop eye disease and what you can do to prevent eye disease.  You will then be advised how often you should have your eyes examined based on your current eye health.

The greatest compliment our patients can give is the referral of their family and friends!

Eye Examination

Your eye health and vision examination consists of several different tests and procedures.  These tests are designed to diagnose the vision correction required for you to achieve optimal vision efficiency for your distance and near visual requirements.  You may need glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises or medication to correct your vision or eye health problem.  When your eye exam results have been determined, you will receive a prescription and Dr. Patel will review the results of the examination.

Dilated Examination

This test allows a more thorough examination of your retina.  A drop is instilled in each eye to dilate the pupil.  This affect lasts 3-6 hours and will impair near vision for that amount of time and affect light sensitivity.  The distance vision remains intact, so you are able to drive following a dilation.  This examination is highly recommended for first examinations, high prescriptions,  patients with: diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol,  and patients with eye disease: cataracts, glaucoma, high eye pressures, or macular degeneration.  This is an optional test that is highly recommended in addition to the examination.

Retinal Photography

Retinal Photography is a safe alternative to dilated eye exam in most cases.  A picture is taken of each eye and Dr. Patel reviews your images with your in the exam room.  This is an optional test that is recommended in lieu of a dilated examination.

Visual Field

A highly advanced computerized instrument that provides a thorough assessment of your central and peripheral vision.   It is used to help early diagnosis of glaucoma, certain types of brain tumors, cataracts, and macular disease.  This is an optional test that is offered in addition to the examination.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Office Visits

Flashes/Floaters:  Onset of flashes of lights or spots in vision.  This is considered an emergency and we recommend an immediate consultation.

Red Eye:  Any ocular irritation caused by an abrasion, foreign body, infection, or contact lens induced.

Ocular Allergy:  Red, itchy, watery eyes can be treated with the right ocular medication.

Dr. Patel tries to accommodate all office visits with same day or next day appointments depending on the level of urgency.

Diabetes can cause fluctuating vision, and dry eye.  Long  term diabetes, and uncontrolled diabetes can damage the retina leading to vision loss, and blindness by glaucoma or excessive retinal bleeding. Therefore, a yearly dilated examination is recommended for all diabetics.  Uncontrolled diabetics may require more frequent examinations.  At the conclusion of the the exam, with your approval, Dr. Patel will send a diabetic eye exam report to your primary care provider.

Dry Eye Exams

Contact Lens Exam

A contact lens exam builds on a basic eye exam with more specialized testing to ensure proper fitting of a contact lens with the shape of the eye.  Contact lenses come in many categories varying from materials to replacement schedules.  Dr. Patel will discuss your options and make her recommendations and dispense a free trial pair if available.

Dr. Patel will be happy to discuss this and alternative options and refer to the appropriate surgeons.

Latisse

Latisse solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis.  Eyelash hypotrichosis is another name for not having enough eyelashes.  Latisse helps to grow the eyelashes, making them longer, thicker, and darker.  This is a great alternative to eyelash extensions and for those individuals recovering from cancer treatment and burns affecting the eyelash growth.

Ocular Surface Disease (OSD)/Dry Eye occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or your tears do not have the proper chemical composition.  A thorough evaluation of your signs/symptoms and microscopic evaluation will determine the source of your dry eye.  Several products and procedures are available to help control dry eye.  Dr. Patel will assess your level of OSD and outline your treatment plan.
